Anyone who has lived here in Southern New Jersey has heard of the Pine Barrens. Scattered throughout the Pines,  are a bunch of little old towns. One of them is Atco (Waterford Township). Atco is right in the thick of the Pines and is bordered by Wharton State Forest in many places. Anyone living in this town or any town near Atco has heard of the Atco Ghost. Down a dark road in Atco, supposedly Burnt Mill Road, there is a house, and apparently a few years back a little boy was playing with a ball in the yard. Now understand that Burnt Mill Road is a long straight road that goes for quite a while and heads straight out into the forest. It is pretty common for cars to go pretty fast down this road and in fact you could say they race down this road. Well, the little boy chased his ball into the street, where he was hit by a speeding car and killed. The car and its partying occupants took off and were never found. Another version of the story says that a speeding truck came out of sewer treatment complex at the end of the paved part of the road and the drunkin driver hit the kid.   Just a Note!!   There is NO documentation on any child being hit and killed by an automobile or truck on Burnt Mill Road.  Go Figure!!   But anyway……

lilghos2.gifOver the years, people have been going to the spot of the tragedy to see the little boys ghost chasing his ball into the road. You are to go at midnight and park in a specific spot. Then flash your lights at the area across from the house. The house is one which is suppose to have a fence in the front with an opening leading up to the home. You are to park three telephone poles away from the opening in the fence and face the area in front of the house. Sound your horn 3 times, blink your headlights 3 times and if you wait long enough and the paranormal conditions are just right, an image of the dead boy is supposed to be seen chasing the ball into the street with headlights coming at him. Almost all of the people that have seen this have described it in the same way. Some have seen slightly different scenes but the basic story is the same.

lilghost.gifI’ll tell you this, if you do go down Burnt Mill Road at night and keep going beyond where the pavement stops and then keep going a little farther you’ll probably end up with some ghost stories of your own. It’s a “DARK as dark can be” road. You can easily end up lost and even if you’re lucky enough to end up back on paved road before morning you’re not going to know where you are anyway.

sounds like an urban legend to me, something for teenagers to scare themselves with…it is hard to find good entertainment before you are old enough to get into bars.

I have lived in S jersey, right in the pines, my entire life. There is no jersey devil, though I can’t say for sure that there is no other spirit or ghost in those forests. Very hard when you are out there, so far from everyone and everything, especially at night, to not believe in such things!

My friend and I went out there to see what we could find, we did all the things that we were told, the lights and horn, but we saw nothing of a boy chasing a ball into the street. the weather was overcast and it was rather windy at the time, but as I sat there in the front passenger seat I thought I saw what looked like a teen sized being wearing what appeared to be a hooded sweatshirt, with hood up, and he was pointing his right arm, it looked like a shadow figure, and all the hairs on my right arm and leg went up and I felt a strange energy on my whole right side, from my head to my foot, it was very strange, I shrugged it off then my friend asked if I had seen anything and I said that I wasn’t sure, and he said then you did see it, that confirmed that I had indeed seen somthing, then he told me what Ihe had seen and said I’m glad you saw it too, I thought I was just seeing things. This is a true story, it happened about 2 years ago now, I was 47 at the time and my friend was 21, we worked together when he told me about the ghost and I asked him to show me, do I believe the story about the boy and the ball, I didn’t see that, but we did see a shadow figure, do I believe that there are energies of beings that have passed, yes. The question is do you fear what you don’t understand, for me no I just try to learn from it.
    Peace be with you.

    The atco ghost is real.

  • Paul says:

The REAL ghosts are near the intersection of Fleming Pike(dirt road that goes from Elm to Atsion) and Chew Rd near the RR tracks. If you want something REAL special to do some night, walk the tracks from Atsion to Tuckahoe Turf Farm. Be careful of the light coming at you from down the trackls, and of the severed manaquine arms and hands back there. How they got there? God only knows. :)

  • Paul says:

Though there is no documentation of the little kid with the ball being hit, 4 teens in a car WERE killed when their car hit a tree near the Fleming Pike-Chew Rd. area.

WE USED TO DEER HUNT BACK THERE LONG BEFORE THE TREATMENT PLANT WAS THERE. I WAS ABOUT 12 WHEN WE FIRST STARTED GOING BACK THERE. WHEN I WAS OLDER FRIENDS AND I DRIVE BACK OFF-ROADING AND HAVE A FEW BEERS and have bonfires (back in the eighties) so I was never ever scared there. I never heard about that ghost. One night a buddy and I decided to go back and drive around for a while, we had food and drinks and felt like 4-wheeling for a while. As soon as I turned down Burnt Mill the hair on the back of my neck stood up. I just shook it off and didnt say anything..but as I drove down the road I started to get really scared. I thought I been going here forever its ok. but the farther I went down the road, the more scared I got..just felt like something was going to happen or we were going to see something we shouldnt…as if we were being watched…was terrified but still didnt say anything. As we went back in the pine barrens it got worse but the road was narrow and had to go quite a ways before I could turn around. Finally I did, I couldnt take it anymore. I really didnt want to leave becuse I knew my buddy would really break my stones. we got back out on white horse pike drove a ways before saying anything. When I told my buddy about why I left , he said wow…..as soon as you turned on Burnt Mill…I was hoping you turned around. he said he was scared !@#less….and said something was going to happen. Whats odd is as soon as we were on the that road….both were really scared and couldnt put a finger on it why…..Was it a ghost? I have no idea but I never felt like that before or ever again when we were there. really wierd…just thought I would share the story…..starnge I know
